원래 라틴어 stilus에서 유래한 말로써 글씨를 쓰는 도구를 뜻하는 말이었다. 문체란 문장에 나타난 작자의 개성(style), 즉 문장의 개성적 특성을 말하는 것으로서, 다른 문장과의 단순한 차이점이나 특이성만을 의미하는 것이 아니라, 그 작가만이 쓸 수 있는 완성된 품격으로서의 개성적 특성을 의미한다.
